Wood chips (Ramial Chipped Wood – RCW)

Ramial Chipped Wood (RCW), or wood chips, is made from shredded branches and tree limbs using a wood chipper. It is known for enhancing soil biodiversity by providing fresh lignin to fungi and microorganisms. Wood chips are often used as ground cover to protect young tree shoots from winter frost and to create natural pathways in wooded areas.

RCW (Ramial Chipped Wood) or decomposing wood chips provide nutrients to the soil that cedar wood chips do not. RCW creates a rich humus that improves the structure and overall health of the soil. It breaks down over 3 to 4 years and turns into a nutrient-rich soil that can be used to naturally fertilize gardens—safely and effectively. For this use, it is ideal that the wood chips be at least 60% hardwood.

RCW is often used in gardens or nurseries as mulch to protect plants and shrubs from harsh weather, frost, or drought. It insulates the soil and protects plant roots from the cold in winter while feeding the soil in the spring. During hot spells, it helps retain moisture in the soil by shielding it from direct sunlight. It’s commonly used around conifers or blueberry bushes for these same reasons. RCW is also great for protecting the soil around any shrubs or trees on your property—even cedar hedges can benefit from it.

Our favorite way to use RCW or wood chips is to create natural-looking forest paths for our clients. This adds a nearly organic appearance to your trail. It also prevents weeds from growing while enriching the soil for nearby trees and shrubs. It’s eco-friendly and much more comfortable to walk on than gravel or stone paths.
